Following on from the success of the Women and LGB networking events the Law Society hosted its first BME speed networking event.

Despite the inclement weather over 80 lawyers and hosts attended the event. Robert Bourns, vice president opened the event and key speakers included Funke Abimbola Managing Counsel Roche Products Ltd and Solomon Wifa who at aged 37 became the youngest ever managing partner of O Melveny & Myers. Feedback from attendees and hosts was very positive here are some of their comments:

Shazia Anwar a legal consultant:

‘The event met my expectations and the fact that many committed lawyers, to diversity, were present under one roof and easily accessible and approachable offered a great opportunity for lawyers from diverse back grounds to make connections with and further their/our careers.’

Abigail Kalonga trainee solicitor – Weil Gotshail Manges

‘I thought that the panel of speakers was exceptional and shared very useful tips on how to use networking events effectively. This was particularly insightful for me as a junior lawyer who has not attended many of these events.’

Paul McFarlane – partner – Weightmans

‘It was a pleasure to take part in this event. I found it very worthwhile and was glad to impart some of my knowledge and experience to those coming through the profession.’

Funke Abimbola – Counsel – Roche products Ltd

‘Having provided keynote speeches at similar events for the Women Lawyers’ Division, it was a real pleasure to support this within the EML Division. Effective networking is empowering and a key element of career progression - visibility is really important. Participants gained as much from the 2 keynote speeches as they did from the networking afterwards. I would encourage anyone looking to improve their networking skills and build up their network to attend future events.’Following on from the success of the Women and LGB networking events the Law Society hosted its first BME speed networking event.
