This Tuesday evening presentation will help you to gain an improved understanding of the implications of recent decisions within the Competition and Appeal Tribunal.

It will include thoughts from leading competition law barristers and a solicitor representative from the Competition Appeal Tribunal’s user group.

  • Jon Lawrence, partner, Freshfields and solicitor representative from the Competition Appeal Tribunal’s user group

Jon has been a partner at Freshfields since 1993. He is one of the UK’s leading antitrust litigators specialising in commercial and international litigation and regulatory investigations, with particular emphasis on EU and antitrust law. Jon is head of the global antitrust litigation group and qualified in England and Wales as well as Hong Kong, and admitted in Ireland. He is one of the two solicitor representatives on the Competition Appeal Tribunal’s user group. Jon was educated at Downing College, Cambridge.

  • Kassie Smith QC, Monckton Chambers

Kassie Smith QC is a specialist competition/regulatory litigator. She was one of just two barristers listed in GCR’s Women in Antitrust for 2016 and is classed as a leading silk in competition, EU and telecoms. Directories describe her as ’Very approachable and easy to get on with, she’s very fast, clear and someone who cuts to the chase.’ She also recently acted for the Defendant, the Law Society, in the first trial under the new fast track procedure in the Competition Appeal Tribunal. She is currently advising the government on the Fox/Sky merger, and the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on various matters under its regulatory and competition law powers.

  • Mark Hoskins QC, Brick Court Chambers

Mark Hoskins was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1991 and was appointed QC in 2009. Called to the Irish Bar in 2017, he is widely regarded as one of the leading litigators in competition law. He has considerable experience of leading large teams in complex litigation. In Sainsbury’s v MasterCard , he acted for MasterCard in a seven week trial in the Competition Appeal Tribunal. Mark acts before a wide variety of courts and Tribunals. Domestically he has appeared in cases in the Chancery Division, Commercial Court, Administrative Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. He has appeared regularly in the Competition Appeal Tribunal since its creation. 

  • Tom de la Mare QC, Blackstone Chambers 

Tom has a competition law practice that spans the full range of EU and domestic competition law matters, with particular focus on competition regulatory work (gas and electricity, telecoms, water etc) and private enforcement (“stand alone” and “follow on” claims) as well as state aid.  Tom works extensively for both claimants and defendants, regulators and the regulated, in a wide variety of sectors.  He has been involved in a number of the leading recent and reported competition damages cases.  Tom has also advised (and written) extensively on the viability of claims under the new collective proceedings facilitated by the Consumer Rights Act 2015, in relation to which he is an acknowledged expert.  Tom was a member of the CAT Working Party on collective redress.
