The winners of the prestigious Horsfall-Turner Essay Prize Competition were announced at the Law Society’s Competition Section formal dinner on 3 December 2015.

Three outstanding trainee solicitors were recognised for their exceptional essay-writing skills.

  • First prize of £1,000 went to Ms Jasminder Chaytor, a trainee solicitor at Berwin Leighton Paisner.
  • Highly commended prizes of £250 went to:
    • Mr Ali Sadek, a trainee solicitor at Freshfields
    • Ms Laura K. Elliott, a trainee solicitor at Cooley (UK) LLP.

The annual essay competition is designed to encourage young lawyers to develop an interest in European law. It is open to all trainee solicitors and paralegals working at law firms or in-house legal departments in organisations with an office in the UK.

Judge Ian S. Forrester of European Union General Court awarded the winners of the essay prize, which is given to the best essay submission on a given topic every year.

This year the Competition Section entrants were asked to write on the subject: ‘Brexit: what would it mean for the UK competition law landscape?’

The Competition Section is a Law Society membership group that provides its members with insight into changing legislation and regulation through thought leadership on topics such as compliance, privilege, disclosure and enforcement.

Services to section members are delivered through face-to-face networking events, exclusive online content and topical webinars. The content is identified by the Law Society in collaboration with an advisory committee of competition law practitioners.

Isabel Taylor, partner, Slaughter and May, and current chair of the Competition Section committee, was one of the awards judges.
