The Law Society wrote on 15 April 2014 to express concern over the arrest and indictment in March 2014 of Mr Thulani Rudolf Maseko, a prominent human rights lawyer, and Mr Bheki Makhubu, Editor of The Nation magazine. The charges followed the publication in The Nation of allegedly contemptuous articles criticising Chief Justice Michael Ramodibedi, High Court Judge Mpendulo Simelane and the judicial system of Swaziland.
The Law Society is gravely concerned over the reported surveillance of Mr Upul Jayasuriya, President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) and a senior human rights lawyer in Sri Lanka.
The Law Society is concerned for the present welfare of Mr Abdulhakim Al Fadhli. Mr Al Fadhli is a member of and advocate for the Bedoun community within Kuwait. We are concerned that he appears to have been targeted for arrest as a result of his current and past legitimate and peaceful activities as an advocate for the Bedoun community.
